Europe by van Day 30

We didn’t get a walk last night as it started raining heavily. I’m trying to ration myself with my last book, The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell. I didn’t expect to get so much reading time caused by the enforced stay in Croatia so I’m short of books.

A mist hung over the valley when we got up but it soon cleared and it started out bright and sunny. We re-traced our route for a few miles then got to the motorway which as ever was choked around Karlsruhe, made even worse by roadworks. Once across the Rhine we headed in the direction of Trier, going through tunnels and twisting round forested hills with deep valleys within which nestled little villages.

I had hoped for a potter around Trier as we haven’t visited since taking 4 teenagers in the Citroen BX 35 years ago, en route for Eurocamp but now we have found the same panoramic view of the Mosel as Jan we’ll just stay here for the night. We have a day in hand so tomorrow we can do Mr C’s Band of Brothers thing and visit the memorials in Foy. By then we’ll be in striking distance of the port for Saturday sailing and cheaper deisel in Luxembourg.

The 170 miles took 4 hours due to slow traffic and many roadworks.

We have parked so that we can view the boats on the Mosel and watch the shadows from the passing clouds changing the colours of the patchwork vineyards far below. It’s a stunning spot so thank you Jan Harling!
