Between fen and mountains

On the old frontier

We set off from the sandstone “Orgues” at Ille sur Têt before climbing through the garrigue to reach Puig Pedros which used to be the old border between France and Spain before the treaty of the Pyrenees in 1658. We returned via the ruined the village of Casenoves. It was a hot walk with the temperature around 28°, which is remarkable for this time of the year. It was only 10 km with 370 m of ascent but the terrain was difficult, rocky, dry and dusty. One of our number lost his footing and fell heavily, cutting his nose. Fortunately, after a little rest, he was fine to continue.
