Flood defence

Rather common Dutch Landscape view of the polder flood defense.

These highly maintained areas of willow trees at the water edge are used as the roots spread rapidly in the wet land to secure the land and prevent it being washed away which would allow the river to flood in land.

Even in today's world of modern materials the willow or buried willow branches which also send out long roots are the material of choice for land stabilization
