Whyteside Inn
But there's nothing so lonesome,
So dull or so drear
As to stand at the bar
Of a pub with no beer
This is what used to be the Whyteside Inn, in Polmont. I visited here a few times not long after moving to the area, but it closed many years ago (I've tried to find out when it closed, but even Google doesn't seem to know!).
The place is pretty much abandoned now. Occasionally, some company or other tries to get permission to knock the building down and replace it with flats, but a local, and rather vocal, "action group" seems determined to keep the place in it current condition... heaven knows why, I cannot imagine it's a nice place to be at night (or even nice place to walk past).
But the action group obviously knows how to work the system, for the building remains upright (in a surprisingly good condition for somewhere that has been unused for so long) and the developers are repeatedly sent home with their tails between their legs.
