Guernsey is privileged by Renoir!
One of our museums has been greatly privileged to have a number of ‘original Renoir’ paintings shipped over to Guernsey for the public to see. Some behind reflective glass were touchable and others only a metre away. Thousands of islanders are flocking to see this amazing display close up (plenty of staff guarding them, and a bag search before you enter!) it’s on till December. Each ticket allows 1 hour and its well run. It’s the only Renoir exhibition in the world in 2023, it celebrates the 140th anniversary of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s stay in Guernsey where he painted many of his pictures. There is even a ruin of the cottage where he stayed to paint on our cliffs! What an amazing thing for us to see so close up! Here is just a bit more info from the internet…… On 5 September 1883, the French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir wrote a letter from the island of Guernsey, expressing admiration for its “superb rocks … as well as rump steak and ale at reasonable prices”. Renoir spent five weeks on Guernsey, captivated by its scenery and quality of light!!
