catterpillar attack

these blighters have gorged on my brussel sprout plants overnight.  Yesterday I saw nothing, this morning I found this lot and more.   

I'm furious.  I've  searched on the net for ways to get shot of them and have subsequently made a spray of soapy water mixed with garlic and chilli flakes.  If anyone has any experience or knowledge of something that definitely works I'd love to know.
