My brother and J turned up yesterday with all the tools and all the know-how. We talked about what I wanted where and they set to, laser-levels and all. This was the state of play about 4pm today.

Because the house is airtight they have to be very careful not to pierce the membrane behind the plaster, hence the horizontal battens (which will, in due course, support the top cupboards) screwed into the studs supporting the plasterboard.

A few months ago J said he'd like to work with me on the kitchen so I could teach him my woodwork skills. Well, he is three lifetimes ahead of me and the most sophisticated bit of support I could manage was making cups of tea and taking them out for a meal.
