Rainshower over Culter Fell

Jen took a day off today so that the three of us could do something together.  We ummed and aahed about going to the Grey Mare's Tail but that is a bit of a drive from here so we opted for the nearer Tinto Hill which has 360 degree views.  The forecast was for sunshine but we still packed our layers and waterproofs in our rucksacks.  Sensible decision because as soon as we climbed out of the car in the carpark we felt the biting wind.  The promised north to south cold front had definitely arrived.

On with a layer and we were away up the footpath.  At the beginning it was indeed bright with blue sky but as we neared the summit at 707m, we could see a rainshower coming our way and I stopped to put my camera away and don my waterproof.  It swept over us quite quickly and was soon away across the Clyde and on to the Southern Uplands, the subject of my blip, but the wind strengthened as we were on the last section and, once on the top, we had a quick selfie and dropped down a few feet in to a basic rock shelter for a quick cuppa before descending.

Tony had spotted an unusual circular feature from the top and, sure enough, next to the path at the bottom was the outline and ditches of Fallburn Hillfort, easy to see on my photographs (not on this one, wrong direction).

We headed for Hickety Pickety Tearoom afterwards but sadly there was no room in the café so we drove to Lanark and enjoyed toasted sandwiches in a tearoom.  Great to have some time with Jen and blow the cobwebs away after yesterday's long drive.
