Slovenia - day 3
After the late night last night after our trip to Piran, it was horrible to wake up at 5am for our 5.30am outing. We had planned to photograph the sunrise at Lake Bohinj, but as we approached the area we saw it was covered in a thick mist. We photographed the St John the Baptist church and its adjacent stone bridge, which appeared ghostly through the mist, and the boats on the lake. After a couple of hours we headed back to the guest house for breakfast.
By now it was very hot and sunny. The last few days have been 23C with almost cloudless blue skies, not always the best conditions for photography, so it was decided that today was a day of photographing churches. First stop was the Church of St. Primus and Felicianus at Jamnik, which is perched on top of a hill, as many of the churches here are. Then we went to see the Spomenik complex in Dražgoše, which is a war memorial to commemorate the battle of the Slovenian partisans against the Nazis in 1942. It was such an incongruous sight to see Brutalist architecture against the beautiful mountains receding into the distance (first extra).
On to two more churches, but our luck started turning against us. We arrived at the most beautiful church, softly side lit but the late afternoon light … but there was some kind of fashion/model shoot going on in front of the church which meant we couldn't photograph the church. We went to another church up another hill, the Church of our Lady of Sorrows on Bukov Vrh Hill, which was in a lovely setting.
Then we had about an hour’s drive to another church on a hill, St Ana Church at Jezero, where we planned to photograph the sunset and the church but we got into awful Ljubljana traffic and we ended up missing the sunset. By the time we got there we missed seeing the sun but got the post sunset orange sky which was lovely. As darkness fell the bats came out and a young couple came and sat on the bench under the tree, completing the scene - see extra.
We headed off to a restaurant for supper but when we got there it was closed for renovations! So we had another hour’s drive back to Lesce to go back to the restaurant we went to on our first night as the food was good there. We were kept entertained on all our drives by shouting ‘Hey Google, play xxx on the car’s music system - everyone was taking turns with music requests and then us girls were singing loudly in the back of the car while the one poor male in our group sat in the front having to put up with all the girls’ singing!
By the time we got to the restaurant and had supper it was another late night. When I get back to my room at around 10.30pm it takes time to charge up batteries, charge my phone, shower etc before I can finally get to sleep and by then I am feeling exhausted. Another early start tomorrow, I will be a wreck by the time I go home!
