Book Club

I was hosting Book Club this afternoon, and my intention had been to blip the table laid out with mugs, plates, cake and cookies against the autumnal flowers before people arrived. However, a few people arrived about ten minutes early, and I just didn’t get round to it! So instead, you have to make do with the flowers and the book we had been reading, Horse by Geraldine Brooks, an American/Australian author of historical fiction. The book tells the story of Lexington, the fastest and most famous thoroughbred of the nineteenth century, Being forced to retire from racing early due to rapidly developing blindness in one eye, he went on to sire a long line of champions. Despite the simplicity of the title, the reason for which is revealed in the book, the novel tells the story from three different time periods, about race and freedom, horses and art. Braiding together these different narratives, Horse tells a distinctly American story that shines a light on the legacy of slavery and the pursuit of independence.
We had quite a good number today - 8 of us - each one having enjoyed the book, and we had some good discussion.
It was a beautiful afternoon, so once everyone had gone by about 4.15, R and I loaded the bikes up, and went for a bike ride.
