Life in a Northern Town

Polly Pocket

If you were a child in the 90s, or had kids or grandchildren in the 90s, you’ll probably be familiar with Polly Pocket.

I’m sorting through our collection - some of them, including this one (Snow White’s cottage) sell well on EBay (other auction sites are available) so I’ve been listing today. I have all the figures but not the cauldron, which has gone walkabout somewhere in the last 25 years. I’ve seen some people selling their entire collection for thousands of pounds - amazing what keeps its value and what doesn’t.

Yesterday I had a private consultation with a doctor about removing a troublesome cyst, which the NHS, after years of mismanagement and underfunding, is unable to do. The last time I got my credit card out in a doctor’s consulting room was in Alaska when I was bitten by a mosquito bigger than a budgie. I had all sorts of mixed feelings but needs must. At the same time, John has had absolutely incredibly prompt and efficient care from the NHS after a routine cancer screening scare (he’s absolutely fine but it’s probably saved his life in the long term) - it’s good to know it’s there when the chips are really down.
