Reber telescope

Built during The Depression in his backyard using lumber from his local hardware store, Grote Reber invented the science of radio astronomy and made the first radio map of the Milky Way galaxy. Now housed at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Greenbank WV, it is a national landmark.
