Taking a risk
The morning dawned quite bright if a little cool, even giving us a sprinkling of hailstones while Bertie and I were out for his morning walk. Nick had decided to walk a couple of miles along the woodland track to get a different spot to view the rally cars passing through our corner of the island. I was enjoying the peaceful walk with Bertie when all of a sudden I saw that he was half way up a tree with a six foot drop below him. He had taken this route to get closer to the birds flitting about and chirping overhead. The tree was mossy so he had a good grip but, although he was on a lead, there was nothing I could do to save him if he slipped. Fortunately, he obeyed my instruction to come back to earth. The rest of our walk passed uneventfully until the rally cars started. Bertie did not like that noise so we had to head back home at a fast pace.
During the evening Nick persuaded me to walk down to the end of our drive for “just a few minutes” to watch some of the leading cars finish the latest stage of the rally. There was an encampment of marshals who were checking every car passing through and giving them their times. It was quite fun watching all the goings on and hearing all the latest news from the communications chap. So much so that we spent quite a bit longer there than the planned few minutes. (Extra)
If any of you have watched “Island Crossings” on BBC Scotland, you may have seen the young male CalMac crew member who entered the Mull rally last year. It was really good to see him and his navigator achieve the position of overall winner this year.
