Aquae Sulis
We were “trapped” in Bath today due to the Bath Half Marathon . A huge event with many roads closed . We couldn’t extract our car until 2.30 pm.
Well a sunny autumn day in Bath is a pretty good place to spend a few hours. We went to the Roman Baths and museum. The remaining Roman buildings, a couple of thousand years old have been supplemented by displays , exhibits and an excellent audio guide.
The Romans discovered a hot spring at this site and and dedicated it to Sulis a Roman Goddess.
The photo shows the Roman bath, largely surrounded by Victorian statues and walkway, with Bath Abbey in the background.
After that we went to the Abbey
The extra shows the Roman drain for excess hot water from the spring, a bit of Roman mosaic floor, a carving from the Temple of Sulis , then in the Abbey, a beautifully embroidered / constructed Altar cloth, and Luke Jerram’s “Gaia”
