Chidoeck House
Just about 100 yards from where we're staying. Believed to have been built in the 15th century possibly as the Dowager House for the then nearby Chideock Castle, the house is Grade II listed and has featured greatly in the history of Chideock.
Four of the five Chideock Martyrs, arrested in the Castle in 1594 for their loyalty to the Catholic Faith, were believed to have been given a preliminary hearing in the hallway before being taken to Dorchester for trial and subsequent execution.
During the Civil War in 1645, it is believed that General Fairfax established his headquarters in the house whilst the castle was under siege. His ordnance was set up in the area at the back of the garden.
It's a Bed 'n Breakfast house now with some fancy prices to match the history...
