The day began with a light frost after a chilly night, and we decided we really had to turn the heating on in J's room. By mid-morning it was feeling nearly as warm outside as it was in the colder parts of the house - I wasn't sure if the laundry would dry outside, but it did. After lunch P had an appointment in Dover, so we took the opportunity to go for a stroll. A road closure meant that we found ourselves close to the Kearsney Abbey park, so we saved the coastal reserve at Samphire Hoe for another day and enjoyed a gentle meander round the lake, watching the ducks, swans and coots, the flock of swooping gulls and the many, varied dogs. The swans are ever hopeful that the people have bought bags of bird food from the café, and follow visitors in pairs or groups, becoming increasingly insistent if they see signs of treats. We don't feed them, but J enjoys their confident proximity though I remain wary. It was quite peaceful there today, almost windless, and the leaves are starting to colour; perhaps we can return in two or three weeks, with a bit of sun to make the colours glow.
