The Lozarithm Lens

Maxinquaye (Monday 16th October 2023)

Back in January 1994 there were any number of record shops in Bath that I used to visit regularly in my quest to find very cheaply priced CD singles, which they often were in their first week of release. There was Replay, Rival, Our Price, HMV, Musicland and many others, some just selling second hand records, pretty much all gone now.
I remember entering one, probably Our Price, and hearing an unearthly sound playing on their hi-fi system. When I asked I discovered it was Aftermath by Tricky, the first solo single by someone who had previously been a member of Massive Attack. He had recorded it back in 1991 but had only just mixed it and put it out, and the electric keyboard sample that dominated the track had been taken from a Marvin Gaye record (see previous day's LOTD).
I didn't buy the CD single, it was probably too expensive, but found it the following month at Rival Records in Swindon for just 99p, and I bought the album Maxinquaye as soon as it came out a year later. It included a longer version of Aftermath and three or four other singles. It is now considered his masterpiece and a key release in the trip-hop genre he became associated with.
As a self-confessed non-singer his vocal contributions were mostly half-whispered and spoken with any melody supplied by his partner Martina Topley-Bird, who perfectly complemented the spooky ambience of the record.
The album has just been remastered and re-released, with a second CD containing his new versions of most of the tracks, made to sound how they would be if he was making them for the first time now, and also a session recorded in 1995 for the Evening Session programme on Radio One for Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley.
I had to pre-order the set as soon as I read about it and it landed on the doormat on this day, the day of its release.
