Piercebridge Roman Fort
Back in the day this fort was known as Morbium and helped defend a bridge on Dere Street where it crossed the River Tees. I was told by a local this part was only discovered when the local landowner wanted to build more houses.
It turns out all the village is built on the footprint of the old fort. In the past building on or using material from ancient times didn't seem to matter.
Much of it appears reconstructed from what was found. Nearby is the remains of the old Roman Bridge which resembles a pile of old stones in a field. The course of the river has greatly changed since those days.
