Takahe

We spent some time at Zealandia (fully fenced urban ecosanctuary in Wellington). The 255 hectare eco sanctuary is a conservation project that has reintroduced 18 species of native wildlife back in the area.
The Takahe was presumed extinct for 50 years but in 1948 a small group were rediscovered in the wild. Now there is a managed Recovery Programme on several off shore islands and the population has risen to 400 birds. These two are now too old to breed but are a great attraction at Zealandia.
