Aftermath
Curtains opened at first light and binoculars trained on the boat (what other items are “trained”?) All is well. We’ve survived the night. Over to the yard to survey the carnage; still breaking waves, but the wind has dropped a lot and backed to the north. By 2pm it's forecast to further back round to a westerly and salvage can start. Back home to breakfast while the SK and F attend the Lucy & Yak sale at the Biscuit Factory (apparently the queue was round the block; they didn’t tarry) and when the SK returned we took a stroll out the breakwater to check the boats from this side.
And who came walking towards us deep in thought, but the harbour team themselves. Seven boats badly damaged plus MillyM which capsized on the pontoon (the RFYC lost two sunk plus their workboat). Doubtless many other minor scrapes, and the moorings are all over the shop. A headache for the Gents.
Later I went over to join the collective efforts. Niall is so upset at the state of his boat that he departs the scene, sickened by the sight of it. Phil, currently on holiday, posts a photo of his trashed bow (which I’d sent him) on the Club whatsApp. "It seems I am 12" shorter. Will that improve my handicap - and my yard fee for the winter?”
That’s the spirit, eh?
