The Way I See Things

Autumnal togetherness

When I went out bug-bothering in the garden this afternoon I wasn't expecting to find myself interrupting any private moments, but here we are. I beat this pair of Cinnamon Sedges from the quince tree, and they were so outraged that they immediately hurled themselves off my beating tray onto the ground. I was pretty contrite about it, but not so much as to leave them in peace, obviously. Offered a fallen Norway maple leaf they climbed aboard, and I then held up the leaf in one hand while operating the camera with the other. This is a combination of the two best frames, stacked in Photoshop and then run through Topaz Sharpen AI.

The term Cinnamon Sedge covers a group of caddisfly species. This one is Limnephilus lunatus, which is readily identifiable by the dark-edged pale crescent marking at the outer edge of the wing. I covered it in reasonable detail when I found a single specimen at the beginning of the month, so I won't repeat myself here.

I've chosen this image for today partly for the pleasing autumnal tones in it, but also because it makes me happy to think that our wildlife pond, which will shortly be netted for the winter, is likely to be receiving the fruits of this interaction first. And also - let's be honest - because bug porn. We all have our weaknesses.
