Long-jawed Orb-weaver spider
Backblip. Yesterday lunchtime, I spotted this Long-Jawed Orb-Weaver (Tetragnatha extensa) (that's my best attempt at identification) trying to hide itself by stretching itself along the middle of a nettle leaf. This is what this family of spiders does when disturbed but, while it works well if it tries it along a stem of grass, it isn't very effective on top of a bright green leaf. This species is most commonly found near swampy or pond habitats and this one, true to form, was right on the edge of a swampy reedbed on one end of my office's business park pond. Doesn't it look, for all the world, like a squid? In fact, one of my work colleagues thought that's what it was when she saw the photo.
