River Rothay
River Rothay
Early morning walk toward Loughrigg.
Today we drove up to Workington & Dad’s birthplace in Barepot by the River Derwent. The old cottages have all gone now but the beauty of the place hung in the air.
We then drove through town, a sadly dilapidated town like so many in the UK, and on to Salterbeck & number 22 Salterbeck Road where Dad lived as a young boy through to marrying Mum & leaving the Lakes for good. Of course he left the Lake District, but the Lakes never left him. Dad’s bedroom was on the front of the house and there he would look across the Solway Firth to western Scotland & the most glorious sunsets. He would often mention those magnificent red skies.
Later, at Whitehaven harbour, I wandered around & thought about just how much this place meant to him.
We miss him very much.
