The view at breakfast
Look at the sunshine and so much going on in this mighty view - taken from the breakfast room 6 storeys up. This is the working port of Cork and the river Lee is still much used. There are warehouses - old and new - and posh new office blocks and apartments mushrooming up and the moon was out and planes taking off from the nearby airport. So much to look at whilst we tackled massive portions of granola and strong coffee.
Retail experiences held no interest ( I had purchased lots of crucial arty stuff for Esme's stocking yesterday) so we wandered up to the Shandon area of the city . This is dominated by the impressive steeple of St Anne's topped by what's called de goldy fish. Each face of the tower has a clock and each one usually has a different time so it's called the Four Face Liar! We also went into the nearby cathedral which was a huge and elegant space - yes, with a man wheeling his bicycle through it. It also held a relic of the Blessed Thaddeus McCarthy - a leg bone I suspect. His is an odd story and Finola tells it well. We marvelled at how this interesting, ancient and very hilly part of Cork has yet to be gentrified for it is full of interesting buildings including the wonderfully named Firkin Crane, part of the old butter market.
Home now and a quiet night in after all that excitement.
Back blip - worth looking at just for the bathroom!
