Life in a Box
Sorting boxes. Mostly photos and memorabilia. This is a membership card for the village Workmen’s Club. The subs in 1970 were 5/- for the year, and the card shows it was fully paid up. Originally it was the workingmen’s club and started life in 1905 as a Rifle Club, financed by Captain and Lady Anson. It was presented to the workmen of the village by Lord Vernon in 1919. Now it is a fully modernised, up to the minute facility, called Club 142, though still referred to as the Workmen’s by many. The holder of this membership card spent Friday afternoons in retirement with his mates in the club. These meetings were fondly known as evensong.
