The First English Civil War

This rather insignificant looking memorial stands on an overgrown verge of a 'B' road not far from Kineton in Warwickshire. It is a memorial to the first battle which took place between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians over who should rule the country. Whilst the battle lasted only a day, each side lost about 1500 men and there was no decisive outcome. The War raged for a further 4 years and there were subsequently 2 further Civil Wars before the Parliamentarians finally secured a victory at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. This led to the trial and execution of King Charles I and the establishment of the Protectorate, under the rule of Oliver Cromwell.
The Memorial reads:
BETWEEN HERE AND THE VILLAGE OF RADWAY THE BATTLE OF EDGEHILL THE FIRST OF THE CIVIL WAR WAS FOUGHT ON SUNDAY THE 23 OCTOBER 1642 MANY OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE BATTLE ARE BURIED THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE TO THE SOUTH OF THIS STONE
