Greenshank

It’s wonderful to actually get out today, and our walk in RSPB Conwy is far more pleasant than expected. The rain holds off, and it’s actually sunny as we walk back along the estuary. It’s the first time in over six months that I’ve managed a complete circuit of the reserve - little short of a miracle when I think of how much pain I was in back in September. Though not pain-free, this is now at a level I can easily manage.

As usual, birds are few and far between, and those we see are tiny specks out on the mudflats. A little group of redshanks wade together through the mud, before flying noisily up river. For now, it looks as though they will be my blip.

Then at the final hide, there’s something of a surprise; a pair of greenshanks. I’ve never knowingly seen one before - such pretty birds, wading through the shallows of the lagoon. By now the sun is out, catching their white breasts beautifully. They’re joined by another photogenic subject - a very lively egret,  moving with unusual animation through the water.

So today’s main has to be a greenshank, with an egret shot in extras, both birds intensely focused on their fishing.
