Joan’s Uncle

I joined several other members of the congregation this morning for the funeral of one of our members. Joan was 86. Her husband Bill died a couple of years ago and I had not seen much of her since then.

As I commented the other day, one often finds out more about someone after they have passed away. There was a lovely tribute to her work as a nursery nurse and the work she had done in and around the church and the community.

The surprise news (to me) was that her uncle had been Eric Liddell, he of Chariots of Fire fame. Joan had recalled meeting him a couple of times. She and her mother briefly appeared in the film itself amongst a crowd.

It was such a beautiful morning that I stopped on my way back from the crematorium at Liberton Cemetery to look over the city.
