One Amazing Place...

St Peter's Square in Manchester is an historic area currently under extensive renovation. The work includes reconstruction of Central Library and the moving of the Metrolink station. The scheme also includes the construction of number 1 St. Peter's Square, a high rise office block. Previously known as St Peter's Field, the square was the site of the Peterloo Massacre on 16 August 1819. An organised political demonstration attracting over 60,000 was charged by cavalry with sabres drawn. 15 people died and up to 700 were injured. The massacre was given the name Peterloo, a comparison to the Battle of Waterloo, which had taken place four years earlier. The Cenotaph in the Square was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and erected in 1924 as a memorial to the First World War fallen soldiers. When the work is completed, the square will be completely pedestrianised and will form an impressive public space worthy of its place in history.
