It was late when we arrived back in Brixham, and the illuminations were on. It is appropriate that there is an illuminated parrot on the wall. The Maritime is now holiday accommodation but it used to be a pub, with a landlady called Pat, who was a colourful character. When we went in this pub about 15 years ago we were greeted by a parrot, wandering about at will. On a signal from Pat, everyone lit up, except the parrot, even though the smoking ban had been recently introduced. We felt a bit out of place, members of an exclusive club we didn’t want to be in.
