I couldn’t not go
Despite being a member of the ‘tofu-eating Guardian-reading wokerati’ *I don’t participate in ‘hate marches in support of Hamas’*.So I was delighted to take part in a huge, completely peaceful, friendly, welcoming vibrant march for a ceasefire in Gaza. Along with maybe 800,000 other people.
From the time it took to depart Hyde Park Corner - 4 1/2 hours - I reckoned it was only slight fewer people that the march against the invasion of Iraq in February 2003.
I chose the main blip above because I agreed with everything he put on his placard - and I liked that he included release the hostages - which is of course absolutely necessary. So many friendly conversations, with him, with some older women from the peace Pledge Union selling white poppies, some Palestinian women who’d come all the way from Blackburn - and many others.
I made a collage of some other things I want to remember from the day:
. Some of the Remembrance Day poppies at Paddington station, there were hundreds of wreaths.
. A very bold parakeet in Green Park who sat next to me while I was waiting for my friend to arrive from Lewes
. A message for Sunak which needs saying
. Showing the clear connection with Remembrance Day, despite Braverman trying to create division and hatred
. There was no hate - there was co-operation and friendliness
It’s impossible to show how many, but this was my best view of a mass of people. Note there is a pole with an Irish flag and a Palestinian one together. Quite a strong Irish presence, also a lot of Glasgow Celtic football fans with a gigantic banner
. Another 2 handmade placards which I liked very much
Finally - a little bit of Gaza came to Piccadilly Circus - as I was going to the tube. A convoy of 3 cars hooting and waving flags. Who could blame them for a little show of celebration after such an amazing day
