Sand pools
Once again, the weather hardly invites a trip outside. It’s cold and windy, though generally dry, and by mid afternoon, there’s even a break in the clouds. Reluctantly, I agree to a short walk - planning a return to West Shore.
Closed roads and school-run queues mean our journey veers from our initial plan, and we end up at Morfa Conwy - and it’s good to revisit this beautiful stretch of beach after some months of absence.
Last time we were here was early summer, and the autumn storms have left their mark. The usual long channel of standing water that’s left by tides along the beach has been transformed to a stretch of shallow interlocking pools. They’re beautiful and fascinating, each rippled by the wind as it whips up the sand to form a low layer of shimmering movement on the beach.
By now the sky is taking on the ice cream hues of a cloudy winter sunset, pinks and blues reflected in the water. I’m tempted to wait to see whether the colours intensify, but by now the clouds gathering to the west suggest there will be no sunset tonight. The bitter wind sends me clambering up the steep sand bank to the warmth and shelter of the car to wait for G’s return from his walk along the coastal path.
My main today looks west towards Anglesey, Puffin Island just visible, the tiny figure of a dog walker giving a sense of the vastness of the sands. The extra faces east towards Llandudno’s Orme, pastel pinks reflecting the late afternoon sun.
