Crashed!

After Storm Debi I was doing Ranger duty checking for trees that had been knocked down by the wind or had been left 'hanging'. Luckily, only a few this time.
However, sometimes the blow that fells them seems to come at random. This tree has had it's trunk violently twisted with huge force, snapping the main stem about 4 feet off the ground. It was in a sheltered position and there appears to be no weakness, damage or disease that would make it more vulnerable than identical trees planted at 3 metre intervals alongside it. A targeted tornado? Thunderbolt? Zeus?
Something to ponder before it is dispatched in pieces by chain-saw..
