Heritage Celebrations
It’s Heritage Week this week so there are lots of people wandering around town in Victorian dress. We were supposed to help set up for the Garden Party in the Oamaru Public Gardens this morning, but it was very wet, very windy and very cold so the event was cancelled. We went instead to the Newcomers’ Coffee Group at the Oamaru Opera House. Having been asked to “dress up” and not having any Victorian clothes we went along in our Art Deco clothes. We had an enjoyable time and I took a photo of two ladies in beautiful dresses who were not part of our group but who had come for coffee. We drove home, changed into warm clothes and put the heater on to warm the house.
We had tickets for That Bloody Woman - the story of the suffragette Kate Sheppard, who helped bring about the vote for women in New Zealand in 1893, the first country in the world to establish universal suffrage. The rain had more or less stopped and the wind had dropped by the time we left home, so we were able to walk there and back. It was a fabulous show, a musical, a bit risqué, but thoroughly enjoyable.
