Dark Beer

"A nation of shopkeepers". Both MrsM and I come from families where that kind of lifestyle featured, along with other varieties of small business, so we have some empathy with the joys and sorrows involved. We also have a particular affection for this corner of the UK. More so here than anywhere, we hope the small businesses we like will thrive and prosper

The last time we were on an extended stay, Covid uncertainty trumped all other worries. No-one knew for sure when they would be forced to close their doors or when the customers would stop coming. The difference now is palpable. At least three times today, I have walked through doorways where, two years ago, we were greeted with relief and gratitute. Now, the atmosphere is confident and optimistic.

The young cafe-owner - then taking the first faltering steps - is now watching through the windows to spot elderly regulars who need help across the car park. The baker still has bread for sale in mid-afternoon - not a risk they took in 2021. The brewery has an 'open tap' - customers chattering in the old cowshed where the makeshift bar is established. We are just two more, welcome in the crowd

The lights in the yard illuminate gleaming steel vessels in the old hay-barn, where the next brew is fermenting. A chalked label on the vat says "Al Fresco". Ain't that the truth! The plastic containers are beneath a sign: "Brewing chemicals" - nothing to hide. I did not ask about the creel. A sideline? A 'hedge' from more uncertain times? A fallback if they ever return? Or thrown out of the back of the barn to make space for more barrels, its time now past? Leave it al fresco
