Ashmolean

We went to a meeting at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and one of my fellow trustees is the co-curator of the magnificent "Colour Revolution" exhibition currently on. This was one of the highlights, the "Devonshire Parure" 1856, worn by a Countess at the coronation of Tsar Alexander II. It incorporates ancient gems and Tudor cameos from the collection of the Duke of Devonshire.

Oxford was unbelievably crowded. It was Saturday, the beginning of Black Friday Week (how can Black Friday be a week?), Oxford Brookes University had an open day, the Christmas lights had just been turned on, and there was a big demonstration in support of Palestine.  It reminded me why I don't go to Oxford very often.
