Dumbiedykes and walnut whip
I had a walk with the dog this lunchtime in Holyrood Park.
The view is over a part of the city, just outside the old city walls and the World’s End pub, called Dumbiedykes with its coloured houses. A change from the old days.
The walnut whip reference is to the ribbon roof of the W Hotel above the St James Quarter on the skyline. I have shown this previously and described it as a complete architectural clash with the surrounding buildings. This view has not changed my opinion.
Still, Georgian terraces may have seemed outlandish when they were built but they drew on more classical lines.
The hotel’s design is known by another name locally but I will refrain from using it. Just think of it as an emoji.
