finial

I arrived early at the bus stop on the Whitesands today so took some time to look at the finials on the railings by the Nith and to take some photos of them. A friend had recently posted about them on FB and I was surprised that so many people hadn't noticed that they were there. It is, indeed, surprising that there is no mention anywhere nearby about the design and making of these works of public art.

The finials were designed by Natalie Vardey, a local jeweller who also sings in the same choir as me (the Cairn Chorus). There are 38 in all, of various designs - whistles, eyeglasses, shuttles, sails and fish. This photo is of an eyeglass, with a keyhole at one end to represent the work of local smiths (blacksmiths made locks and keys).

I was in town for a swim - I enjoyed it so much on Tuesday that I thought I'd go again and have a nice sauna and steam afterwards.

It's choir tonight so time to make the tea :-)
