Walking In Wales On A Sunday

Walking in Wales, in their Sunday best,
The path is winding and long.
I see Greta and Doreen, Irene and Jill,
With Margaret and Bob leading on.

Over from England, holidaying here,
They're clearly enjoying the route.
There are some chaps at the back
Stepping out too, each in a hat and a suit.

But, if Greta and Doreen, Irene and Jill,
(With Margaret and Bob leading on)
Desire a drink at a fine public house,
Well, they'll have to rethink that plan!

Today, I'm in a pub. And I've had some booze.
(Look away if I stumble or lurch!)
Back in their day, the pubs were all closed. *
Sundays meant chapel or church.

* Sponsored by prominent Welsh nonconformists
in the Liberal party, such as future Prime Minister
David Lloyd George, the Sunday Closing (Wales)
Act 1881 banned the sale of alcohol in Welsh pubs
on the Sabbath. It would not be repealed until 1961,
when each county was charged with holding
a referendum on Sunday opening, to gauge support
in their particular area.
