From Changi Airport, we took the Metro downtown to our hotel and upgraded to a (slightly) larger room before battling the jet lag with a bus trip and a stroll over the Helix Bridge to the Gardens on the Bay, a slightly mad collision of Science Fiction and horticulture where we enjoyed the pleasures of the Supertree Observatory and the Flower Dome. Then we revived ourselves with a gentle introduction to the joys of hawker markets via the food court at the Marina Bay Sands Shoppes mall, where we had dim sum with red beans and fried bean curd, jellied coffee and salty pineapple crush. Then we bussed it back over to the National Gallery, where we saw a very good exhibition of work by Liu Kuo-Sung – modern brush painting from China from the 60’s on – and had a sumptuous afternoon tea at the Violet Oon National Kitchen. After that we gave in and had an early night…
