This rather unprepossessing building is a former factory, built in 1898, to make collars. The narrow roadway is called Rope Walk, as it used to be part of a walkway making huge long ropes for ships. So long, in fact, that it interfered with people being able to use adjoining roadways. The local  Council tried unsuccessfully to forcibly remove the posts housing the ropes. This included raids at 7am and midnight, though the Council were met by gangs of men holding buckets of tar and feathers. Rope making thus continued until after the owner's death, with the collar factory then providing  less contentious employment.

Many thanks to Carolina for hosting the low key architecture themed  MonoMonday.
