Sir John Murray

There was very little traffic on the Clyde today, the dredger, a couple of motor boats and this fine vessel. This id the "Sir John Murray" and it is a survey vessel belonging to SEPA-the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

Being a reading geek I assumed it was named after the publisher whose authors included Jane Austen and Lord Clark of Civilisation and whose archives are now in the Scottish National Library. But no this is another John Murray who is widely regarded as the father of oceanography which I suppose makes him a more fitting figure for the survey ship to be named after.
