Why do boilers develop faults as soon as we are into sub zero temperatures?

This was what had kept us cold and without heating for a couple of days as our boiler chooses its optimum time to breakdown. Adds a bit of perspective boiling a kettle for a wash down…old school made me realise what privileged lives we now lead!
