The Black Bird and the Moon

The title suggests a song by K T Tunstall or a chapter in a Lord of the Rings rip-off.

However it was one of the images from our day trip to Lancaster to collect a dog ( as we are dog sitting for a week) and to celebrate 2 birthdays.

We set off just before 8 and with Classic FM in full Christmas mode we travelled through magical Narnia-like landscapes. Temperatures were below freezing and as low as -8oC. Snow lay on the ground. Every twig on every tree and bush was covered in hoar frost/ snow. The mist/ fog swirled in and out with ghostly trees appearing eerily in the distance. The sun struggled to crest the wall of mist, occasionally casting a glow on the tops of hills, illuminating clumps of trees or cottages.

All while I was driving and not able to take a photograph!! So frustrating. The scenery was stunningly beautiful.

Our first stop was at Southwaite service station and by then the sun was shining out of a crisp blue sky. I really liked the juxtaposition of the dark bird against the white tree with the moon in the background.

A lovely lunch in a French restaurant in Lancaster where our grandson entertained us - and behaved himself extremely well for a couple of hours. An extra is of him wrapped up well for the walk home. He s growing up so fast, learning new skills every day.

Heading back north we took our usual route home: the A702. About 4 miles out of Biggar ( which had a good display of Christmas lights) we came upon Candymill Road which had an astonishing display of Christmas lights in the gardens of the houses on the street. This is in the middle of the countryside and is so unexpected that we stopped for a look. The temperature was -10oC ( it dropped a further degree later) but the spectacle was worth it. Some examples attached.

There was a donation box for a children’s charity: I hope they raise lots as it was a great display.

Home just more than 12 hours after leaving. A great - but long - day.
