Red, With A Beard But Not Father Christmas
“On a summer’s day, in sultry weather
Five Brethren were born together.
Two had beards and two had none
And the other had but half a one.“
I thought of blipper ceridwen when I saw this hip. I learnt some interesting facts about dog rose sepals from her. Dog roses have five. Two of which have serrated edges, two have smooth edges and one is serrated on one side and smooth on the other. A German monk coined the riddle above in the 1200s.
Unlike most of the others, the hip pictured has held onto one of its dried up serrated/bearded sepals. A true hipster. :)
