Expecting (not without reason) that we were going to take his ball off him.

If we don't, he chews and chews until a weak spot starts and then he starts to destroy it, which isn't so much the issue as that he swallows the bits. Swallowing the small bits isn't a problem, but swallowing big pieces is best avoided.
