I walked back to Parliament from the Cabinet meeting in Bute House today. As I passed Charlotte Square Gardens I noticed this statue standing out from the trees that frame it.

Despite having spent many years coming and going in this part of Edinburgh ( and working in two different jobs with a stone's throw) I don't think I had ever looked properly at it before today nor tried to find out its story.
