Waxwing #78
Finally I have seen my first Waxwing ever! Well, actually, a whole flock of them, about 50 we reckon.
They were in the village of Llysfaen about an hour away from us. My friend had been on Sunday in dreadful weather so when we checked the forecast for today and it showed some nice sunshine, off we went.
They were exactly where they have been for about two weeks and there was a whole flock, which was fabulous to watch.
Unfortunately, as is often the case, the weatherman was quite wrong and it was drizzly and very dull, with no sunshine at all! No matter, I was still thrilled to see them. There was a tree full of lovely red berries right across the road from the school that would have been much better for both light and distance, but sadly the bully of a Mistle Thrush chased the waxwings away noisily whenever they even dared to fly close to the tree. Instead they stayed quite some distance away most of the time and they didn't go near any berries, so there is no lovely feeding shot with a lovely blue sky behind it like I imagined :) This is the best I could do within the time and with the available conditions and is heavily cropped.
We stayed for about 90 minutes before giving up waiting for the sun to come out as we needed to get back home, but I am still buzzing from this lovely encounter.
