Relationships: Messy and complicated

To me these two challenge topics rang as a familiar phrase.
"Messy and complicated." What did the phrase describe? Divorce! I mentioned this to a recently divorced acquaintance, who wholeheartedly agreed.

But how to represent divorce, or a failed relationship, in a photograph?
I came up blank.
Then I recalled these watercolor paintings.
Each of them was made out of empathy for a suffering friend.
They proved to be cathartic for the painter (moi).
