St Stephens Church Newtown
St Stephens Church, cemetary including individual graves and gravestones, and a giant fig tree have been the subjects of several of my blips. It's a great place, especially on a hot day like today.
The church was designed by Edmund Blacket. It was built from 1871-74 out of Pyrmont stone, and slate for the roof. In the English Decorated Gothic Revival style, it was listed on the NSW heritage register in 1999. Its spire reaches 43 metres.
The cost of building this magnificent church was 13,000 Aussie pounds. They were the days! But we should remember that the average weekly wage was probably only a few pennies back in those days.
Thanks for hosting Bob.
